Many patients with retinitis pigmentosa(RP),a collection of inherited diseases affecting the retina of the eye,do not understand or have difficulty understanding why they have problems at night or in dim light.Also,many RP patients want to know the underlying reason or the mechanism causing their eye problems.So,we have written this book for both RP patients and doctors,both eye doctors and doctors of other specialities,to try to explain the mechanism of vision,and how and what changes occur that lead to the visual difficulties experienced by patients with RP.Hopefully,knowing these mechanisms will help RP patients understand what types of treatment are being considered and also the efforts being made to develop effective treatments for these diseases.This book is also written for the families and friends of RP patients who have good vision and might not understand,but want to understand,the overall visual condition of their child or friends.You will find that all of the pictures this book are contoured for touching.We hope that this will allow RP patients and others with poor vision to appreciate what we are trying to demonstrate by these illustrations.
