Othon the Archer, a short story by Alexandre Dumas, was serialized in the French daily newspaper Le Si cle from its inaugural issue on December 25, 1838, until January 24 of the following year. Published as a standalone book in 1840, the work is a fantastic tale set in the Holy Roman Empire, skillfully weaving in an anecdote from the First Crusade. At its core, however, the story can be considered a companion piece to Dumass first major historical novel, The Countess of Salisbury and Edward III (translated into Japanese by the author of the original text, published by Digital Estate in 2025). Othon the Archer is a short story rich with historical context and vibrant imagination.
