Der Beiname "Englische Suiten" stammt - genauso wie jener der "Französischen Suiten" - nicht von Bach. Im Gegensatz zu den intimen sechs "französischen" schlagen die "englischen" Suiten einen prächtigeren Tonfall an: Jede Suite wird von einem Prélude im konzertanten Stil eröffnet; für zwei Sarabanden sind von Bach zusätzlich ausgezierte Fassungen erhalten, die den virtuos-prunkvollen Cembalostil, der ihm hier vorschwebte, eindrücklich belegen.
Auch wenn wir kein autographes Quellenmaterial kennen, ist der Notentext durch mehrere zeitgenössische Abschriften außergewöhnlich gut und zuverlässig überliefert. Authentische Varianten, vor allem zur Ornamentik, werden in der revidierten Urtextausgabe von Ullrich Scheideler mustergültig untersucht, dokumentiert und für den Spieler direkt im Notentext zugänglich gemacht.

The epithet "English Suites" - as with the "French Suites" - did not originate with Bach himself. In contrast to the six intimate French Suites, Bach's English Suites adopt a grander tone, each one opening with a prelude in concertante style. Two of the sarabandes survive in additional versions that feature ornamentation by Bach himself; an impressive testimony to his intended virtuosic and opulent harpsichord style in these pieces.
Despite the lack of autograph sources, the musical text of these works has survived extraordinarily well and reliably thanks to several contemporary manuscript copies. For this revised Urtext edition Ullrich Scheideler has undertaken an exemplary investigation of authentic variants, especially in the ornamentation. All are documented here, and made directly accessible to the player in the musical text itself.

L'appellation de «Suites anglaises», - tout comme celle des «Suites françaises» - n'est pas de Bach. Contrairement aux six Suites «françaises», et à leur caractère intime, les Suites «anglaises» relèvent d'une identité sonore plus grandiose: chaque suite s'ouvre sur un prélude dans le style concertant; deux des sarabandes sont augmentées chacune d'une version ornementée par Bach lui-même, illustrant l'idéal de virtuosité et de somptuosité qui animait sa conception stylistique du clavecin.
Même si nous ne connaissons aucune source autographe, le texte musical a été transmis par l'intermédiaire de plusieurs copies de l'époque particulièrement bonnes et fiables. Dans l'édition Urtext révisée, des variantes authentiques, portant essentiellement sur l'ornementation, ont fait l'objet d'un travail exemplaire de documentation effectué par Ullrich Scheideler, et sont directement accessibles à l'interprète dans le texte musical lui-même.
