Diese im Sommer 1848 ausgearbeiteten, aber vermutlich bereits früher entworfenen Klavieretüden erschienen in der deutschen Originalausgabe Anfang 1849 nur mit der Nummerierung 1-3. In der französischen Erstausgabe Ende des gleichen Jahres erhielten sie - möglicherweise auf Wunsch des Verlegers - den neuen Titel "Trois Caprices poétiques" und zusätzlich jene charakteristischen Einzelüberschriften "Il lamento", "La leggierezza" und "Un sospiro", die sich für die bis heute sehr beliebten Stücke durchsetzen sollten. Gegenüber den frühen Etüden, in denen der rein klaviertechnische Aspekt im Vordergrund steht, bildet hier die poetisch-klangliche Idee das Zentrum dieser dezidiert für den Konzertvortrag geschriebenen Kompositionen. Für die Revision standen mehrere inzwischen neu bekannt oder zugänglich gewordene Quellen zur Verfügung - darunter das als Stichvorlage dienende Autograph.

These piano studies, fully worked out in summer 1848, but presumably sketched earlier, were published in the German original edition at the beginning of 1849 simply with the numbering 1-3. In the first French edition published at the end of that year, they were given the new title "Trois Caprices poétiques" - possibly at the publisher's request - and also received the characteristic individual titles "Il lamento", "La leggierezza" and "Un sospiro", which have remained for these pieces that are still popular today. In comparison with the early studies, in which the purely technical performing aspect is to the fore, the idea of poetic sound is at the heart of these compositions, which were clearly written for concert performance. For this revised version, several newly-discovered or newly-available sources were available, including the autograph which served as the engraver's copy.

Ces études pour piano, finalisées durant l'été 1848 mais probablement conçues déjà bien avant, sont parues dans l'édition originale allemande au début 1849, simplement numérotées 1-3. Dans la première édition française, publiée à la fin de la même année, elles ont été pourvues - probablement à la demande de l'éditeur - d'un nouveau titre : Trois caprices poétiques, ainsi que d'intertitres séparés: «Il lamento», «La leggierezza» et «Un sospiro», qui se sont imposés pour ces pièces très appréciées jusqu'à nos jours. Contrairement aux Études précédentes, où la technique pianistique pure est mise au premier plan, l'invention poético-sonore se trouve au coeur de ces compositions clairement destinées à l'exécution en concert. Pour cette édition révisée, on a pu disposer de plusieurs sources nouvellement découvertes ou rendues accessibles; parmi elles, l'autographe qui avait servi de modèle de gravure.
