Die "Polonaise-Fantaisie" gehört zu Chopins letzten großen Klavierwerken und ist Zeugnis seiner reifen Meisterschaft. Der außergewöhnliche Titel verrät bereits, dass Chopin sich unschlüssig über die Gattungszugehörigkeit seiner Komposition war: zwar scheint der typische Rhythmus und der noble Charakter der Polonaise immer wieder durch, doch zeichnet sich die "Polonaise-Fantaisie" vor allem durch eine große Freiheit in der thematischen und formalen Gestaltung aus. Das Werk schweift durch verschiedenste Tonarten, Stimmungen und Motive, um wie nach einer langen Reise in eine grandiose Schlussapotheose zu münden.

The "Polonaise-Fantaisie" is among Chopin's last great piano works, and is a testament to his mastery and maturity. The out-of-the-ordinary title betrays the fact that Chopin was uncertain about which genre to assign it to. While the typical rhythm and noble character of the Polonaise repeatedly shine through the notes, the Polonaise-Fantaisie is characterized above all by a great freedom in its thematic and formal aspects. The work brushes against a great variety of keys, moods and motifs, and leads into a grandiose closing apotheosis as if at the end of a long journey.

La Polonaise-Fantaisie compte parmi les dernières grandes compositions de Chopin pour piano et témoigne de la maturité de son art. Son titre inhabituel révèle déjà que Chopin rechignait à la classer dans un genre précis: en effet, si le rythme caractéristique de la polonaise et son caractère noble transparaissent régulièrement, la Polonaise-Fantaisie se distingue par ailleurs par une grande liberté thématique et formelle. L'oeuvre passe par des tonalités, des atmosphères et des thèmes variés pour déboucher enfin sur une grandiose apothéose finale, comme à l'issue d'un grand voyage.
