Neben den großen Zyklen wie den Englischen und Französischen Suiten, den Goldberg-Variationen oder dem Wohltemperierten Klavier hat Bach auch eine Fülle von Einzelstücken mit unterschiedlichsten Titeln hinterlassen. Sie stammen zum größten Teil aus seiner frühen Jugend- und Lehrzeit, etwa aus den Jahren 1700-1710. Der Titel des vorliegenden Werks - übersetzt "Capriccio über den Abschied des allerliebsten Bruders" - verrät, dass es sich hier um programmatische, lautmalerische Musik handelt, wie sie im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert sehr beliebt war. Bach zeigt sich in den sechs kurzen und fantasievoll überschriebenen Sätzen von einer anderen als der gewohnten polyphonen Seite. Anlass für das Stück mag der Abschied seines Bruders Johann Jacob Bach gewesen sein, der 1704 in schwedische Dienste trat.

Along with his major cycles such as the English and French suites, the Goldberg Variations or the Well-Tempered Clavier, Bach also left a wealth of single pieces with a great diversity of titles; they stem in large part from his early youth and student period around the years 1700-1710. The title of the present work - translated as "Capriccio on the departure of his most beloved brother" - reveals that this is programmatic, onomatopoeic music of the kind that was very popular in the 17th and 18th centuries. In its six short and imaginatively-titled movements Bach shows a different side of himself from the usual polyphonist. Perhaps we owe this piece to the departure of his brother Johann Jacob Bach, who entered service in Sweden in 1704.

Outre les grands cycles des suites anglaises et françaises, les Variations Goldberg ou le Clavier bien tempéré, Bach a laissé une profusion de pièces indépendantes aux titres les plus variés. Ces dernières datent pour la plus grande part de sa jeunesse et de ses premières années d'enseignement, c'est-à-dire les années 1700-1710. Le titre de la pièce présentée ici - en français «Caprice sur le départ de son frère bien-aimé» - révèle qu'il s'agit d'une musique descriptive à programme telle qu'elle était en vogue aux 17e et 18e siècles. Dans ces six courtes pièces aux titres pleins de fantaisie, Bach se montre sous un jour différent de celui qu'on lui connaît. Cette pièce a sans doute été inspirée par le départ de son frère Johann Jacob Bach au moment de sa prise de fonction en Suède en 1704.
