1849 gab Schumann unter dem Titel "Bilder aus Osten" sechs Impromptus für Klavier vierhändig heraus. Wie aus der Vorbemerkung der Erstausgabe hervorgeht, verdankt Schumann die Anregung dazu den "Makamen" - eine Gattung arabischer gereimter Prosa - des mittelalterlichen Dichters Hariri in der Übersetzung Friedrich Rückerts. Abu Said, die Hauptfigur der Makamen - Schumann verglich sie mit dem deutschen Eulenspiegel, - sei ihm während der Komposition nicht aus dem Sinn gegangen. Das erklärt den "fremdländischen Charakter" der Musikstücke. Auch mehr als 150 Jahre später haben die "Bilder aus Osten", die nuanciert eine breite Palette von Klangmöglichkeiten im vierhändigen Zusammenspiel nutzen, nichts von ihrem Reiz eingebüßt.

In 1849 Schumann published six Impromptus for piano four-hands with the title "Bilder aus Osten". As can be seen from the preface of the first edition, Schumann was inspired by the "Maqama" - a genre of Arab rhymed prose - by the medieval poet Hariri in the translation by Friedrich Rückert. Schumann could not banish the protagonist in the Maqama, Abu Said, whom he likened to the German character Till Eulenspiegel from his thoughts whilst he was writing the works. This explains the "foreign character" of the pieces. Even 150 years later, the "Pictures from the East" with their nuanced use of a wide range of sound possibilities in the interplay of the four hands, have lost none of their charm.

En 1849, Schumann publia 6 impromptus pour piano à quatre mains sous le titre de «Bilder aus Osten». Comme il ressort de l'avant-propos de la première édition, Schumann s'est inspiré des Makâmas - un genre de prose rimée en arabe - du poète du Moyen-Âge Hariri, traduits en allemand par Friedrich Rückert. Abu Said, le personnage principal de ces Makâmas, que Schumann comparait avec le Till Eulenspiegel allemand ne le quitta pas durant toute la composition, ce qui explique le caractère «exotique» des pièces. Plus de 150 ans après leur parution, les «Images d'Orient», qui recourent de manière très subtile à la large palette de sonorités du piano à quatre mains, n'ont rien perdu de leur charme.
