Rund zehn Jahre bevor Johannes Brahms seine späten, melancholischen Klavierstücke komponierte, entstanden 1879 die beiden Rhapsodien op. 79 - zwei ausgesprochen leidenschaftliche und vergleichsweise umfangreiche Werke. Brahms spricht der rekonvaleszenten Clara Schumann gegenüber mit gewohntem Understatement von zwei Stücken, "an denen Du Dich recht austoben kannst und auch erproben, ob denn die Kur auch genützt hat". Wir möchten eher der Brahms-Freundin Elisabeth von Herzogenberg zustimmen: "Daß das g moll mein Liebling ist, macht mich aber nicht unempfindlich gegen die kraftvoll stachelige Schönheit des h Moll". Die beiden beliebten Werke erscheinen nun revidiert auf der Basis der neuen Brahms-Gesamtausgabe.

In 1879, about ten years before Johannes Brahms composed his late, melancholic piano pieces, he wrote the two Rhapsodies op. 79 - two markedly passionate and comparatively extensive works. In a letter to the convalescent Clara Schumann, Brahms spoke in a typically understated fashion about the two pieces "with which you can really run riot and test whether the course of treatment has actually had any effect". We prefer to agree with Brahms' friend Elisabeth von Herzogenberg: "the fact that the g minor is my favourite does not make me insensitive towards the intensely prickly beauty of the one in b minor". Both of these popular works have now been revised on the basis of the new Brahms Complete Edition.

Les deux Rapsodies op. 79, deux morceaux passionnés et d'envergure, parurent environ dix ans avant que Brahms ne compose ses pièces pour piano tardives et mélancoliques. C'est par une de ses litotes habituelles qu'il annonce à une Clara Schumann convalescente deux pièces «avec lesquelles tu pourras te défouler et aussi vérifier si la cure t'a été utile». Mais laissons plutôt la parole à Elisabeth von Herzogenberg, une autre amie de Brahms: «le morceau en sol mineur est mon préféré, mais je ne suis pas insensible à la beauté puissante et mordante du morceau en si mineur». Nous publions désormais une version révisée de ces deux pièces très populaires basée sur la nouvelle édition complète des oeuvres de Brahms.
