Auch wenn der spanische Komponist Werke in allen Gattungen schuf, stand doch fraglos das Klavier im Zentrum seines Schaffens. Herausragend aus seinem Frühwerk sind die 12 Danzas españolas, die 1890-95 in vier Heften erschienen. "Meine Inspiration fußt vor allem im Gesang des Volkes," erklärte Granados. "Dennoch stellen sie [die Tänze] keine bloße Übertragung dar, sondern sind ganz eigenständig." So heben sich die Stücke deutlich von der konventionellen Folklore der Zeit ab. Sie stehen vielmehr in der Tradition der Charakterstücke eines Chopin oder Schumann, mit individuellem Kolorit dank rhythmischer und melodischer Anleihen bei Tänzen aus ganz Spanien. Für diese Urtextausgabe wurden alle verfügbaren Quellen gründlich ausgewertet, darunter auch Granados' eigene Einspielungen.

This Spanish composer wrote compositions for every genre, but the piano was undoubtedly his main focus. The 12 "Danzas españolas", first published in four volumes between 1890 and 1895, are an important highlight in his early oeuvre. "My inspiration is founded above all in the singing of the people", explained Granados. "Nevertheless, [these dances] are quite original and are no mere transcriptions". They thus set themselves apart from the conventional folkloric pieces of the time, belonging instead in the tradition of the character pieces of Chopin or Schumann. Their rhythms and melodies borrow from dances from all over Spain, and this is what gives them their unique atmosphere. All available sources were consulted for this Urtext edition, including Granados's own recordings.

Même si le compositeur espagnol a abordé tous les genres, le piano était incontestablement au coeur de son oeuvre. Les 12 «Danzas españolas» publiées en quatre cahiers entre 1890 et 1895 dominent son oeuvre de jeunesse. «J'en ai puisé l'inspiration première dans le chant du peuple» expliquait Granados. «Elles [les danses] restent malgré cela originales et ne sont aucunement une transcription». Ainsi ces pièces se distinguent-elles nettement du folklore traditionnel de l'époque. Elles se situent bien plutôt dans la tradition des pièces de caractère d'un Chopin ou d'un Schumann, avec une couleur propre farcie d'emprunts rythmiques et mélodiques à des danses de l'Espagne tout entière. Cette édition Urtext repose sur un examen exhaustif de toutes les sources disponibles, parmi lesquelles également les propres enregistrements de Granados.
