Mit kaum einem anderen Kammermusikwerk hat sich Dvorák so lange und intensiv beschäftigt wie mit diesem Trio. Nach den ersten Erfolgen mit von tschechischer Volksmusik inspirierten Werken, namentlich den populären Slawischen Tänzen (HN 757 und 918), wollte er sich nun als Komponist höchster Ansprüche präsentieren. Daher arbeitete er das innerhalb von acht Wochen im Frühjahr 1883 entstandene Trio im folgenden Sommer nochmals gründlich um, bevor er es seinem Verleger übergab. Die Kammermusik von Brahms war unüberhörbar Vorbild für die neue Komposition, ohne dass dies die Entfaltung eines ganz eigenen, expressiv-leidenschaftlichen Tons behindert hätte. Wie schon beim "Dumky"-Trio op. 90 (HN 799) zeichnet Andreas Groethuysen für den Fingersatz des Klavierparts verantwortlich.

Dvorák worked longer and more intensively on this Trio than on just about any other chamber music work. After his first successes with pieces inspired by Czech folk music, namely the popular Slavonic Dances (HN 757 and 918), he now wanted to prove himself as a composer of the highest order. This is why in the following summer, he thoroughly reworked the Trio that he had written within eight weeks in spring 1883 before giving it to his publisher. Although Brahms' music was the undeniable model for the new work, it did not hinder the unfolding of a very personal tone that blends expressiveness and passion. As with the "Dumky" Trio op. 90 (HN 799), Andreas Groethuysen is once again responsible for the fingerings of the piano part.

Dvorák n'a jamais travaillé de manière aussi longue et intensive sur une oeuvre de musique de chambre que sur ce trio. Après les premiers succès que lui valent ses fameuses Danses slaves (HN 757 et 918), des pages inspirées par la musique populaire tchèque, il souhaite montrer qu'il est capable d'un art hautement exigeant. Ainsi, après avoir écrit son Trio en fa mineur en huit semaines, au printemps 1883, il le remanie en profondeur durant l'été avant de le soumettre à son éditeur. L'influence de la musique de chambre de Brahms sur cette nouvelle oeuvre est évidente, sans pour autant qu'elle ait nui à l'épanouissement d'un langage tout à fait personnel, expressif et passionné. Comme pour le Trio «Dumky» op. 90 (HN 799), c'est Andreas Groethuysen qui s'est chargé de doigter la partie de piano.
