Im Gegensatz zu den großen Sammlungen der Partiten sowie der Französischen und Englischen Suiten sind Bachs Fantasien sowie seine außerhalb des Wohltemperierten Claviers entstandenen Präludien und Fugen nicht in zusammenhängenden Zyklen überliefert. Vielleicht ist das ein Grund dafür, dass nur wenige von ihnen größeren Bekanntheitsgrad erreicht haben. Lediglich die berühmte Chromatische Fantasie und Fuge BWV 903/903a und die große c-moll-Fantasie BWV 919 haben einen festen Platz im Konzertrepertoire der Pianisten gefunden. Einige der in dem Band zusammengestellten Werke sind ausgesprochene Jugendwerke, die noch nicht die Meisterschaft des reifen Bach, aber stets eine frische Erfindungskraft aufweisen.

In contrast to the large collections of partitas, along with the French and English Suites, Bach's Fantasies, and his Preludes and Fugues besides the Well-Tempered Clavier have not come down to us as interconnected cycles. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why only few of these works gained widespread popularity. Only the much-acclaimed Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue BWV 903/903a and the great c-minor Fantasy BWV 919 have found a permanent place in pianists' concert repertoires.
Some of the works compiled in this volume are undoubtedly juvenilia that do not yet hint at the mature Bach whilst nevertheless pointing out the composer's fresh power of invention.

Contrairement aux grands recueils des partitas, à ceux des suites françaises et anglaises, les fantaisies de Bach et ses préludes et fugues, hormis ceux du Clavier bien tempéré, ne sont pas parvenus à la postérité sous forme de cycles. Peut-être est-ce parce que peu d'entre eux ont atteint une notoriété aussi importante. Seules la célèbre Fantaisie chromatique et fugue BWV 903/903a et la grande fantaisie en ut mineur BWV 919 ont trouvé une place permanente dans le répertoire de concert des pianistes. Certaines des oeuvres rassemblées dans ce volume sont des oeuvres de jeunesse d'excellente facture qui, si elles ne présentent pas encore la maîtrise de Bach à sa maturité, témoignent de la fraîcheur de sa force d'invention.
