Rachmaninows bekannter Klavierzyklus entstand 1931, zu einer Zeit also, als ihm seine großen Werke für Klavier solo und die Klavierkonzerte bereits großen Ruhm beschert hatten. Um ein "Alterswerk" handelt es sich jedoch keineswegs. Der Komponist brennt mit seinen Variationen über das Thema "La folia" (das er einer Corelli-Sonate entnommen hatte) ein wahres pianistisches Feuerwerk ab. Einem Freund gegenüber äußerte er dazu lakonisch: "All das verrückte Herumrennen ist nötig, um das Thema auszulöschen." Ob es Rachmaninow gelang, "La folia" - d. h. die "Verrücktheit" - zum Schweigen zu bringen? Probieren Sie es selbst aus!

Rachmaninoff wrote his well-known piano cycle in 1931, at a time when his great works for piano solo and the piano concertos had already made him very famous. Yet it is by no means the "work of an old man". The composer's variations on the theme "La folia" (taken from a sonata by Corelli) are like a series of fireworks on the piano.
He once drily said to a friend, "All this mad running about is necessary in order to efface the theme". Did Rachmaninoff succeed in silencing "la folia" - i.e. the "madness"? Why not see for yourself!

Corelli Variations op. 42
Ce célèbre cycle pour piano de Rachmaninov parut en 1931, à une époque où ce dernier s'était déjà assuré une grande popularité avec ses grandes oeuvres pour piano solo et ses concertos pour piano. Il ne s'agit cependant nullement d'une oeuvre de «vieillesse». Avec ses variations sur le thème «La folia» (repris d'une sonate de Corelli), Rachmaninov déclenche un véritable feu d'artifice pianistique. Voici ce qu'il dit laconiquement à un de ses amis à ce propos: «Cette course folle dans tous les sens est nécessaire pour effacer le thème.» Est-ce que Rachmaninov est parvenu à faire taire «La folia»? Essayez-vous même!
