Mit seinen Études-Tableaux verfolgte Rachmaninow jenen Weg weiter, den Chopin und Liszt mit ihren Konzertetüden vorgegeben hatten: anspruchsvollste technische Aufgaben werden in Form von ausdrucksstarken Charakterstücken dargeboten. Rachmaninow verfasste zwei Zyklen mit ursprünglich jeweils neun Études-Tableaux, zog jedoch bei Opus 33 kurz vor der Drucklegung drei Stücke zurück. Einige postume Editionen haben diese Entscheidung später rückgängig gemacht; unsere Ausgabe folgt jedoch genau der Anordnung mit 6 Stücken in op. 33, wie sie Rachmaninow selbst für die Publikation festgelegt hatte. Die zwei erhaltenen, ursprünglich nicht veröffentlichten Études geben wir im Anhang unserer Urtextausgabe wieder.

With his Études-Tableaux Rachmaninoff continued down the path that Chopin and Liszt had already set out on with their concert etudes: the most demanding technical tasks are presented in the form of expressive character pieces. Rachmaninoff composed two cycles, each originally with nine Études-Tableaux; however, shortly before Opus 33 went to print, he removed three of the pieces.
Several posthumous editions later reversed this decision. However, in our edition we follow the exact structure with six pieces as laid out by Rachmaninoff for publication. The two surviving etudes that were not originally published are reprinted in an appendix to our Urtext edition.

Avec ses Études-Tableaux, Rachmaninov poursuivit la voie tracée par Chopin et Liszt dans leurs études de concert respectives: les exigences techniques les plus élevées sont intégrées dans des pièces de caractère très expressives. Rachmaninov composa deux cycles, chacun comportant à l'origine neuf Études-Tableaux. Il retira cependant peu avant la mise sous presse trois pièces de l'opus 33. Quelques éditions posthumes sont revenues sur cette décision; notre édition s'en tient cependant à six pièces dans l'opus 33, agencées dans l'ordre que Rachmaninov avait lui-même prévu pour la publication. Les deux Études conservées, mais qui ne firent pas l'objet d'une publication à l'origine, sont reproduites en annexe à notre édition Urtext.
