Die Komposition für Violoncello und Klavier im Stil eines sizilianischen Tanzes stammt aus Gabriel Faurés mittlerer Schaffensperiode und wurde 1898 in Frankreich und England parallel erstveröffentlicht - was als Hinweis auf die steigende internationale Beliebtheit Faurés gedeutet werden kann. Größere Bekanntheit erlangte das Charakterstück mit seiner einprägsamen, gefühlvollen Melodie durch die Aufnahme in Faurés Suite aus der ebenfalls im Jahr 1898 uraufgeführten Bühnenmusik zu Pelléas et Mélisande (in einer Instrumentierung für Orchester)._

This composition for violoncello and piano in the style of a Sicilian dance is from Gabriel Fauré's middle creative period and was first published simultaneously in France and England in 1898, reflecting Fauré's increasing international popularity.
The character piece with its memorable, expressive melody became increasingly popular after Fauré had included it in the Suite from his incidental music of Pelléas et Mélisande (in a version for orchestra) that was also premiered in 1898._
