Die Oboensonate op. 166 war die erste von drei Bläsersonaten, die Saint-Saëns in seinem letzten Lebensjahr schrieb. Zeitlebens eher mit den Tasten- und Streichinstrumenten vertraut, bewegte sich der Komponist diesmal auf eher ungewohntem Terrain. Den Tonfall und die speziellen Charakteristika dieser Instrumente traf er dennoch auf Anhieb. Um sicherzugehen, dass die Stimmen die jeweiligen technischen und klanglichen Eigenheiten berücksichtigen, ließ er sich vor der Veröffentlichung von befreundeten Bläsersolisten beraten. Seine Sonate op. 166 fand höchste Zustimmung des Oboisten; eine Briefstelle bezeugt: "Es lief wie am Schnürchen". Diese Urtextausgabe konsultierte erstmals auch das Autograph._

The Oboe Sonata op. 166 was the first of three wind sonatas that Saint-Saëns wrote in his fi nal year. Throughout his life he had been more familiar with keyboard and stringed instruments, so the composer this time found himself in rather unfamiliar territory. Yet he instantly hit upon the infl ections and special characteristics of these instruments.
To ensure that the parts refl ected the technical and tonal idiosyncrasies of each instrument, he asked advice of wind soloists of his acquaintance before publication. His Sonata op. 166 met with the highest approval of the oboist; a passage in a letter bears witness to this: "It went like clockwork". We were able to consult the autograph for the first time for this Urtext edition._

La Sonate pour hautbois et piano op. 166 est la première de trois sonates pour instrument à vent écrites par Saint-Saëns dans la dernière année de sa vie. Plus familier de son vivant avec les instruments à clavier et les instruments à cordes, le compositeur s'aventure cette fois sur un terrain plutôt inhabituel. Et pourtant il trouve du premier coup l'intonation et la caractéristique spécifi que de ces instruments. Pour être sûr que les parties respectent bien les particularités techniques et sonores spécifiques, il se faisait conseiller avant la publication par des amis solistes. Sa Sonate op. 166 a rencontré l'approbation totale du hautboïste; le passage suivant d'une lettre le prouve: «cela a marché comme sur des roulettes.» Pour la première fois, cette édition Urtext a été réalisée avec consultation de l'autographe._
