1841, auf der Höhe seiner Meisterschaft, schrieb Mendelssohn in schneller Folge drei Variationenzyklen für Klavier. Der erste Zyklus, die "Variations sérieuses" op. 54, ist wohl als sein bedeutendstes Klavierwerk anzusehen. Er war Teil eines Sammelbandes mit Werken renommierter Komponisten der Zeit, dessen Erlös für die Errichtung eines Beethoven-Denkmals in Bonn bestimmt war. Seinerzeit gab es eine wahre Massenproduktion von sogenannten "Variations brillantes" für Klavier. Um sich davon zu distanzieren, betitelte Mendelssohn seine siebzehn Variationen in d-moll op. 54 mit "Variations sérieuses". Das wunderschöne Hauptthema ist von ernstem, schmerzlichem Charakter, der durch alle Verwandlungen hindurch erhalten bleibt.

In 1841, at the height of his mastery, Mendelssohn wrote three variation cycles for piano in quick succession. The first of them, the "Variations sérieuses" op 54, should probably be regarded as his most important piano work. It formed part of an anthology of works by renowned composers of the time, proceeds from the sales of which were intended for the erection of a Beethoven monument in Bonn. At that time there was something of a production line of so-called "Variations brillantes" for piano; Mendelssohn gave his seventeen Variations in d minor op. 54 the title "Variations sérieuses" to distance himself from these,. The beautiful main theme has an earnest, poignant character that is sustained throughout all the transformations.

Variations sérieuses op. 54
En 1841, alors qu'il était au sommet de son art, Mendelssohn écrivit successivement trois cycles de variations pour piano dont le premier, les «Variations sérieuses» op. 54, doit probablement être considéré comme son oeuvre pour piano la plus significative. Ce cycle faisait partie d'un recueil constitué d'oeuvres de compositeurs contemporains renommés dont les bénéfices étaient destinés à ériger à Bonn un mémorial à la mémoire de Beethoven. À cette époque, les variations pour piano dites brillantes faisaient véritablement l'objet d'une production de masse. Mendelssohn intitula ses dix-sept variations en ré mineur op. 54 «Variations sérieuses» afin de s'en démarquer. Magnifique, leur thème principal est en effet de caractère sérieux et tourmenté et se maintient à travers toutes les mutations.
