Das Scherzo op. 4 entstand im Jahr 1851 - Brahms war noch keine 20 Jahre alt - und diente dem jungen Komponisten und Pianisten gleichsam als Visitenkarte, mit der er bei einflussreichen Musikern vorstellig wurde. Auch den Schumanns spielte er das Scherzo 1853 mehrfach vor und inspirierte damit vielleicht seinen älteren Kollegen zu dem berühmten Zeitschriftenartikel "Neue Bahnen". Schumann pries darin "einzelne Clavierstücke, theilweise dämonischer Natur von der anmutigsten Form". Wir bieten das bisher nur im Sammelband (HN 38) erhältliche Werk nun als Einzelausgabe an, frisch revidiert nach dem Notentext der neuen Brahms-Gesamtausgabe, mit neuem Fingersatz von Andreas Boyde.

The Scherzo op. 4 was written in 1851 - Brahms was not even 20 years old - and was a kind of calling card with which the young composer and pianist introduced himself to influential musicians.
He also played the Scherzo to the Schumanns several times in 1853, and thus might have inspired his older colleague to write the famous article "Neue Bahnen" (New Ways). In it, Schumann praised "single piano pieces, some of them turbulent in spirit while graceful in form". We are publishing the work that has until now only been available in the volume HN 38 in a single edition. It has recently been revised following the musical text of the new Brahms Complete Edition and now also contains new fingerings by Andreas Boyde.

Scherzo e flat minor op. 4
Le Scherzo op. 4 vit le jour en 1851 - Brahms n'avait pas encore vingt ans - et servit pour ainsi dire de carte de visite au jeune pianiste et compositeur pour aller se présenter aux musiciens influents de l'époque. En 1853, il joua également le Scherzo à plusieurs reprises aux Schumann, inspirant peut-être par la même occasion son collègue plus âgé à écrire le fameux article «Neue Bahnen». Schumann y loua «de simples pièces pour piano tantôt démoniaques, tantôt à la forme des plus gracieuses». Publiée jusqu'alors uniquement dans un recueil (HN 38), cette pièce est désormais disponible en édition séparée, fraîchement remaniée d'après le texte de la nouvelle édition complète des oeuvres de Brahms et comportant de nouveaux doigtés d'Andreas Boyde.
