Beethoven hat insgesamt fünf selbständige Rondos hinterlassen. Das vorliegende Rondo in C-dur, op. 51 Nr. 1 erschien im Jahr 1797 im Druck; näheres über den Anlass der Entstehung ist nicht bekannt. Es war die Zeit, in der Beethoven gewissermaßen eine Klaviersonate nach der anderen komponierte. Dazwischen wurde eben auch das eine oder andere Einzelstück zu Papier gebracht. Wie schon die Tempoangabe Moderato e grazioso andeutet, besitzt das Rondo in C-dur einen überwiegend freundlichen Charakter, der im Grunde auch im etwas virtuoser angelegten c-moll-Mittelteil nicht verlassen wird. Das Stück ist mit seinem gemäßigten Schwierigkeitsgrad bestens geeignet, um sich den Beethoven'schen Klaviersonaten anzunähern.

Beethoven left altogether five independent Rondos; the present one, in C major op. 51 no. 1, was printed in 1797 - nothing more is known about the occasion for which the pieces were written. This was the time when Beethoven was writing more or less one piano sonata after the other. In between, he enjoyed putting pen to paper and creating occasional single pieces.As the tempo marking Moderato e grazioso already suggests, the Rondo in C major boasts a prevailingly charming character, which it essentially seeks to maintain in the c minor middle section. The piece, which is only moderately difficult, is very suitable for those wishing to approach Beethoven's piano sonatas.

Le rondo en Ut majeur op. 51 n° 1 présenté ici fut édité en 1797, mais aucun autre élément sur les circonstances de sa composition n'est con-nu. Il date d'une période au cours de laquelle Beethoven composait quasiment une sonate pour piano après l'autre, entrecoupées parfois d'autres morceaux. Comme l'indique le tempo Mode-rato e grazioso, le rondo en Ut majeur possède un caractère plutôt joyeux, toujours perceptible dans la partie centrale plus virtuose en ut mineur. Du fait de son niveau de difficulté intermé-diaire, ce morceau constitue une parfaite entrée en matière pour découvrir les sonates pour piano de Beethoven.
