Ragtime ist als eine frühe Form des Jazz bekannt, mit einem vielfältigeren Erscheinungsbild als uns oft bewußt ist. The Ragtime Dance ist urspünglich ein Versuch, den Ragtime von dem etwas anrüchigen Ruf zu befreien und in anständigere Musikformen zu überführen. Er war für Tanz und und gesungenen Text konzipiert. Eine Fassung für Soloklavier erschien 1906. Sie bildet die Grundlage für die vorliegende Bearbeitung. Der Ragtime ist eine komponierte Form des Jazz, der dem Ausführenden jedoch für Verzierungen oder leichte Variationen einige Freiheit lässt. Die Realisierung sollte trotz aller Präzision im Rhythmus auch Raum für das Aussingen der inneren Stimmen geben. Der Pianist Joplin war für sein cantabile-Spiel bekannt, das in dieser Bearbeitung für sechs Querflöten gut nachzuahmen ist.

At the turn of the century, Ragtime still had much of the aura of the saloons and "sporting houses" in which it was born, although the harmonic language used by Joplin goes beyond what one would expect of bawdy background music and, indeed, sometimes bears a striking resemblance to that of Chopin. Although a forerunner of Jazz, Ragtime is in essence a composed, rather than improvised art form. Nevertheless, a certain amount of extemporanous ornamentation is characteristic of authentic performance practice, particularly in repeated sections. Following on this model, the arrangement found here contains much in the way of ornamentation.
