Extensive research has established that hybrid rice has more than 20 per cent yield advantage over improved inbred varieties. Increasing seed production yields guarantees the quantity and quality of hybrid rice seed required for hybrid rice production in China, hence decreasing the costs for hybrid rice seed production and eventually facilitating the fast and stable development of hybrid rice production in China. Due to the complexity of hybrid rice seed production as well as the undeveloped theoretic basis, very few monographs on hybrid rice seed production have been published.
