The studies included in this volume reflect on the development of Romanian society over the past four centuries in the areas of history, politics, sociology, literature, religion, and culture. They evaluate the impact that tradition and modernity have had on its evolution. These papers were presented at the Sixth International Conference of the Center for Romanian Studies, held in Ia?i, Romania, on 3-4 July 2000, on the theme "Tradition and Modernity in Romanian Culture and Civilization, 1600-2000."
