Full Description

The current work serves as an introductory resource for students who have just commenced their studies in systematic pomology. It offers fundamental knowledge on the subject and encompasses the following topics: The introduction section, divided into three sub-sections, presents the academic aspects of taxonomy related to theories, hypotheses, and fundamental principles that are essential for a basic understanding of systematic pomology. Furthermore, the section provides information on the general origin and distribution of fruits, as well as their flower and fruit structure, to equip students with the necessary background knowledge to tackle problems related to varietal descriptions and testing. The significance of systematic pomology in varietal improvement, the identification of new variety sources, and the methods of synthesis are also discussed in detail.

The sections 1-4 comprise a systematic enumeration of 58 fruits, classified into four categories: tropical and subtropical fruits, small fruits, nut fruits, and temperate fruits. Each fruit crop is examined in depth, covering its historical background, origin, distribution, and uses, as well as the pomological traits of the fruit, important species and cultivars, and line drawings of the fruit and flower structures. The list of cultivars is limited to popular varieties, as the cultivation status is subject to change. The glossary and annexures are designed for clarity and brevity, with the annexures offering detailed information on fruit crops, fruit types, genera, species, and tribes, as well as their classification and status in fruit crop families. Additionally, the botanical terms chart provides a morphological description of leaf, floral, and root structures to facilitate comprehension for readers.
