Full Description
This book offers a new and comprehensive interpretation of Plato's Crito. Through dramatic and philological analysis, it reveals a profound critique of democracy. Unlike other dialogues, Crito exposes an inner mechanism—the MFM (Measure for Measure) argument—whereby the democratic citizen justifies breaking the law as retaliation for wrongs suffered from the polis, yet still sees himself as law-abiding. This unconscious rationalization preserves his moral self-image. In this sense, Crito embodies the democratic citizen. Socrates tries to confront him with the truth—and through this, Plato confronts the reader.
