原著は東京大学出版会より2010年刊行。同時代資料を幅広く渉猟し、3世紀に及ぶ日本政治思想への、簡潔な、しかし目配りの行き届いた、見取り図を提示する。中国の政治哲学を中国とは全く異なる日本文化に適用することの含意を吟味し、近世（アーリーモダン）日本に魅力的な眼差しを向け、サムライの悲哀、農民のための様々な異議申し立て、セクシュアリティと社会秩序、明治初期の新思想や自由に対する興奮などを描き出す。
The author traces the quiet changes in political thought that culminated in the dramatic events of the Meiji Revolution in 1868. Confucian ideals such as a universal Way and benevolent government under a virtuous ruler possessing the mandate of heaven were taught by successive Japanese Confucians and came to permeate the country, posing an implicit threat to military rule. Over time the development of a national consciousness, the rising prestige of the imperial court in Kyoto, and increased knowledge of the Western world created the conditions for a national debate over opening up to the West—and for radical political change.
