At the end of the 20th century, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), finds itself in a state of transition. Expansion from seven to ten members states, the ensuing organizational and political difficulties and the Asian financial crisis are all testing its mettle. This text examines the long-term prospects of the ASEAN-10 economies and their relations with their major trading partners. It also considers the meaning for Southeast Asia of the ASEAN-10: for the first time the entire region will be united under one geopolitical institution.
