Post-Medium Condition, Verzeitlichung, Autopoiesis, Ecological Art. In den seit den 1990er-Jahren entstehenden Minusaquarellen kulminiert das bildhauerische Denken Wilhelm Scheruebls. Obwohl er mit dem Begriff des Aquarells auf eine malerische Praxis anspielt und man so auch in die Falle einer gestisch-abstrakten Malerei tappen kann, bleibt die Wahl des Mediums irrelevant. Es geht nicht um einen psychischen Automatismus, sondern genau um dessen Antithese. Gegen die Ich-Behauptung informeller Abstraktion steht hier der fast völlige Rückzug des Künstler-Ichs zugunsten des reinen Naturprozesses. Minusaquarelle verlassen die Kategorien künstlerischer Praxen und verschieben sie in ökologische Formbildungsprozesse, die immer Balancen sind und zwischen Chaos und Ordnung schweben.
Scheruebl lässt bei den Minusaquarellen mit Wasser und Pigment bemalte Blätter bei Minusgraden in der freien Natur gefrieren. Im folgenden Trocknungsprozess festigen sich die so entstandenen kristallinen Ordnungen zu floralen Erscheinungen. Der Kristallisationsprozess folgt hier einer inneren formalen Logik, wie wir sie auch von Schneeflocken kennen. Für den Künstler, der als Initiator auftritt, bleibt das Ergebnis offen, denn die Kristallisation ist ungleichmäßig und bleibt mehrdeutig. Diese eine Möglichkeit unter vielen zeigt auch den spielerischen Zugang Scheruebls zur Kunst, die für ihn nichts anderes ist als der Versuch, Klarheit in einer natürlichen wie mediatisierten Welt zu schaffen mit dem Verständnis von Natur als primäre Wirklichkeit unter vielen anderen.

Post-medium condition, temporalisation, autopoiesis, Ecological Art. Wilhelm Scheruebl's sculptural thinking culminates in the minus watercolours created since the 1990s. When, with the term watercolour, he alludes to a practice in painting, and we mistakenly think of gestural abstract painting, the choice of medium is irrelevant. It is not a question here of psychological automatism, but of precisely the contrary. As opposed to the self-assertion of art informel, here we have the almost complete withdrawal of the artist's ego in favour of the pure natural process. Minus watercolours abandon the categories of artistic praxis, shifting them into ecological formation processes which are always balanced between chaos and order.
In these works, Scheruebl paints the paper with water and pigments, and allows them to freeze in the open air. In the ensuing drying process, the resultant crystalline arrangements combine to form floral impressions. The process of crystallisation follows an internal formal logic familiar from snowflakes. For the artist, whose function here is that of initiator, the result is unpredictable, since the crystallisation is uneven and remains ambiguous. This infinite range of possible outcomes demonstrates Scheruebl's fanciful approach to art, which he sees as nothing other than the attempt to clarify a natural if mediatised world, where nature is understood as the primary reality among the many others.
