Full Description
Beyond Provenance confronts architecture's reliance on records that define materials through fixed notions of origin, ownership, and value. Against the backdrop of contemporary environmental and social challenges, the book asks how building materials are extracted, circulated, reused, and transformed—and how these processes might be recorded differently. Bringing together historians, artists, conservators, and architects working across disciplines and geographies, it expands architecture's field of inquiry from buildings and sites to quarries, archives, engineered lakes, and demolition yards. By examining the politics of provenance and documentation, the contributors question established practices of stabilization and certification and explore more speculative, collective, and mutable approaches to materials, histories, and design.
Questions architecture's prevalent emphasis on origins, property, and value through an interdisciplinary approach
Connects resource extraction, material reuse, and circular construction with architectural documentation
Features experimental graphic design in a richly illustrated book, including holes drilled through the book block
