With the promulgation of the "UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage" in 2003, a new understanding of world heritage was agreed upon, which differs substantially from historical heritage bound to buildings and to physical objects, or to written documents. Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) is neither exclusively restricted to the past, nor mainly dealt with by experts, since communities and cultural bearers are in the position to maintain their own intangible cultural heritage and to define it. Music relates to almost 60 percent of the world s intangible cultural heritage. The book explores this multifaceted and fascinating relation between music and cultural heritage. With different examples of musical life in historical and contemporary social contexts, the essay examines some of the main issues and questions regarding the production, diffusion and the preservation of musical heritage. The text is foremost a resource for culture workers and others interested in culture of intangible nature. Mit der 2003 erfolgten Verkündung des UNESCO Übereinkommens zum Schutz und zum Erhalt des Immateriellen Kulturerbes, kommt ein Verständnis von Weltkulturerbe in Umlauf, das sich wesentlich von der Definiton von Kulturerbe als ein historisches und auf materielle Güter bezogenes Phänomen absetzt. Immaterielles Kulturerbe bezieht sich weder alleine auf historische Überlieferungen, noch handelt es sich hierbei um ein exklusives, dem akademischen Millieu vorbehaltenes Forschungsgebiet, da Immaterielles Kulturerbe vorrangig von seinen Trägern und Produzenten definiert und entsprechend geführt wird. Annähernd 60% des in die Repräsentative Liste der UNESCO eingetragenen Kulturerbes ist Musik oder steht mit dieser in Verbindung. Im Buch werden die vielfältigen Beziehungen von Musik und kulturellem Erbe erörtert. Mit Beispielen aus verschiedenen Musikkulturen in ihrem historischen und gesellschaftlichen Umfeld wird musikalische Praxis, die Vermittlung von Musik und ihr Erhalt beschrieben. Das Buch richtet sich an kulturwissenschaftlich Interessierte und Berufsfelder im Bereich des Immateriellen Kulturerbes.
