In PRESENTING PHILOLOGICAL READINGS of spatial metaphors inancient texts and their reception based on theoretical approachesto metaphor, this is a pioneering study which also bearstestimony to the increasing interest in the potential andcognitive functions of metaphor in literary studies. Theindividual studies offer a representative synopsis of currenttheories on spatial metaphors and encompass applications toliterary texts from a number of genres and languages ranging fromwisdom texts and philosophical treatises to tragedy and fromAncient Egyptian to Shakespearean English, thus spanning almost3000 years of human thought and language. Based on this frameworkof theory and practice, this volume collects a series of papersoriginally delivered at a conference entitled 'Raum-Metaphern inantiken Texten und deren Rezeption', organized by research group'C-2 Space and Metaphor in Cognition, Language and Texts' of theExcellence Cluster 264 Topoi The Formation and Transformation ofSpace andKnowledge in Ancient Civilizations in Berlin in June2014. --- Within the BERLIN STUDIES OF THE ANCIENT WORLD series,monographs and volumes of all fields of ancient studies arepublished. These publications form the results of researchconducted within the Excellence Cluster "Topoi.
