Der menschliche Körper ist ein von äußeren Interessen, inneren Notwendigkeiten und den verschiedensten Ansprüchen des Selbst durchwobenes Gebilde, dessen Grenzen heute sowohl wörtlich als auch sinnbildlich porös geworden sind. In vertiefenden Essays und umfangreichen Bildstrecken stellt die Publikation zur gleichnamigen Ausstellung Body in Pieces sieben internationale Künstler vor, die den zahlreichen realen Fragmentierungen des Körpers und seiner konfliktreichen Gegenwart nachspüren. In einem Körper, der alle Vorstellungen von Geschlossenheit und Ganzheit hinter sich gelassen hat, liegt aber ebenso das entscheidende subversive Potential für den Bruch mit normativen Ordnungen sowie mit überkommenen Geschlechts- und Rollenbildern. Diesen zentralen Ambivalenzen im Menschenbild der Gegenwart widmen sich die Künstler und Autoren des vorliegenden Buchs.
