Neue ästhetische Sichtweisen auf das Zusammenleben von Menschen und Pflanzen
Während Pflanzen und Bäume zumeist als stumm, seelen- und bewegungslos begriffen werden, zeigen wissenschaftliche Forschungen seit einiger Zeit, dass die Flora weitaus mehr Sinne hat als wir Menschen. Pflanzen kommunizieren miteinander, verfügen über ein Gedächtnis und treffen Entscheidungen. Welche Konsequenzen ergeben sich hieraus für unser Denken und Handeln? Mit den Arbeiten des explorativen Projektes The Senses of Plants stellen Künstler_innen unser Selbst- und Weltbild auf die Probe: So erkundet beispielsweise Zheng Bo die Politik von Bäumen in einem Wald. Sasa Spacal dekonstruiert in ihren Spekulationen zu Mensch-Pflanzen-Hybriden dualistische Denkgebäude, die Mensch und Pflanze oder Natur und Kultur unterscheiden. Die Publikation zeigt neben den Genannten auch Werke unter anderem von María Castellanos & Alberto Valverde, Patricia Domínguez, Nicole L'Huillier, Anton Vidokle.
Der Katalog ist eine Dokumentation und Erweiterung der Ausstellung The Senses of Plants / Die Sinne der Pflanzen in der Villa Merkel, Galerie der Stadt Esslingen. Die künstlerische Recherche ist ergänzt durch Textbeiträge von interdisziplinären Autor_innen wie Paco Calvo und Natalie Lawrence, Andreas Gutmann, Pierre L. Ibisch, Stefano Mancuso und Alessandra Viola sowie Julia Katharina Thiemann.
New Aesthetic Perspectives on Human-Plant Coexistence
Most people think of plants and trees as mute, soulless, unmoving. But scientific research in recent years has shown that flora has by far more senses than we humans do. Plants communicate with each other, remember things, and make decisions. What does that imply for our thinking and actions? In art works of the explorative project The Senses of Plants, artists challenge our understanding of ourselves and the world: Zheng Bo for example explores the politics of trees in a forest. Sasa Spacal's speculations on human-plant hybrids deconstruct dualist edifices of ideas that distinguish between human and plant, or nature and culture. In addition to the mentioned artists, the book presents works by María Castellanos and Alberto Valverde, Patricia Domínguez, Nicole L'Huillier, Anton Vidokle, and others.
The catalogue is a documentation and extension of the exhibition The Senses of Plants at Villa Merkel, Galerie der Stadt Esslingen. The artistic research is complemented by text contributions from interdisciplinary authors such as Paco Calvo and Natalie Lawrence, Andreas Gutmann, Pierre L. Ibisch, Stefano Mancuso and Alessandra Viola as well as Julia Katharina Thiemann.
