Verfremdete, widersprüchliche Materialien
Alice Channer (geb. 1977 in Oxford, lebt und arbeitet in London) untersucht in ihren Skulpturen Beziehungen zwischen Materialien, Korpern, Maschinen und industriellen oder technologischen Verfahren und kombiniert lustvoll Industrieobjekte mit menschlicher Gestik oder natürlichen Spuren wie korperlichen oder geologischen Uberresten. Channer stellt beharrlich Organisches und Künstliches, Biologisches und Industrielles nebeneinander und integriert die Spuren von Produktionsprozessen in die Sprache ihrer Skulpturen. Sie konfrontiert nicht nur ihre künstlerische Handschrift mit der kalten Asthetik mechanischer Formung, sondern verweist mit ihren verführerischen und gleichzeitig brüchigen Exoskeletten auch auf die Fragilitat der Okologie.
ALICE CHANNER ist der erste umfassende monografische Katalog der Künstlerin, der anlasslich ihrer Einzelausstellung in den zwei Gebauden des Kunstmuseums und der Kunsthalle Appenzell Heavy Metals / Silk Cut mit neuen Produktionen sowie Arbeiten der letzten zwolf Jahre erscheint. Die Publikation ladt mit Essays von Rosanna McLaughlin und Zoe Gray, einem experimentellen Text von Daisy Hildyard und einem Gesprach von Stefanie Gschwend mit der Künstlerin ein, ihre prozessbezogene Kunst zu entdecken.
Alienated, Contradictory Materials
Alice Channer's (b. Oxford, 1977; lives and works in London) sculptures explore relationships between materials, bodies, machines, and industrial or technological processes. With relish, she combines her industrialized objects with human gesture or with natural traces such as physical or geological remains. Channer relentlessly juxtaposes the organic and the artificial, the biological and the industrial, weaving the traces of production processes into the language of her sculptures. She not only confronts her artistic signature with the cold aesthetics of mechanical shaping, but also points to the fragility of ecology with her seductive yet fragile exoskeletons.
ALICE CHANNER is the artist's first comprehensive monographic exhibition catalogue, published on the occasion of her solo exhibition Heavy Metals / Silk Cut in the two buildings of Kunstmuseum and Kunsthalle Appenzell, which features new productions as well as works from the past twelve years. With essays by Rosanna McLaughlin and Zoe Gray, an experimental text by Daisy Hildyard, and a conversation with the artist by Stefanie Gschwend, the book project invites readers to discover her process-based creative approach.
