Slavs and Tatars ist ein international renommiertes, in Berlin ansässiges Kunstkollektiv, das sich seit seiner Gründung 2006 der Forschung und einer ganz eigenen Form der Wissensproduktion und -vermittlung widmet. Ursprünglich als Lesegruppe gegründet kuratierten Slavs and Tatars die 33. Internationale Biennale für Grafik in Ljubljana, nahmen an der 58. Biennale di Venezia teil und stellten in internationalen Häusern wie der Pinakothek der Moderne, dem Albertinum, dem Palais de Tokyo, dem Museum of Modern Art und weiteren aus. Die Praxis des Kollektivs basiert auf verschiedenen Medien, von Installationen über Lecture Performances und Vorträgen bis hin zum gedruckten Wort. Im Hinblick auf Religionen und Mythen und Verschiebungen innerhalb dieser verhandeln viele ihrer Werke das Thema Kulturtransfer zwischen dem globalen Westen und Eurasien. In ihrer mitunter humorvollen Arbeit vermengen sie Pop-Visuals mit esoterischen Traditionen und mündliche Rituale mit wissenschaftlicher Analyse auf eine profunde Weise, die den oft eindimensionalen Blick auf die Beziehungen zwischen Wissenschaft, Religion, Macht und Identität hinterfragt.
The Collective Eye sprach mit Slavs and Tatars über ihr kollektives Selbstverständnis, Irritationen und Hindernisse im Übersetzen von Wissen, Orientalismus und die Hegemonie des Englischen und kollektives Kuratieren.
ÜBER THE COLLECTIVE EYE
The Collective Eye (TCE) ist ein Projektkollektiv mit wechselnden Mitgliedern. In Interviews, Symposien, Ausstellungen und Gesprächsbänden geht es um die Stärkung eines multinationalen Dialogs zwischen Kollektiven und Theoretiker*innen in der Auseinandersetzung mit kollektiver Kreativität und Praxis in den Künsten. Dabei blickt TCE transdisziplinär auf Formen der Zusammenarbeit in bildender und darstellender Kunst, in Theatern, Museen sowie Zwischenräumen kultureller Produktion.

Slavs and Tatars is an internationally renowned Berlin-based art collective established in 2006 that dedicates itself to research and a unique form of knowledge production and dissemination. Originally founded as a reading group, Slavs and Tatars curated the 33rd International Biennial of Graphic Arts in Ljubljana and participated in the 58th Venice Biennale; they have also exhibited internationally, including at the Pinakothek der Moderne, the Albertinum, the Palais de Tokyo, and the Museum of Modern Art. The collective's practice is based on a range of media, from installations to lecture performances, presentations, and the printed word. Many of their works engage with religion and myths and their shifting phenomenology, examining instances of cultural transfer between the Global West and Eurasia. Sometimes leavened with humor, their art mixes pop visuals with esoteric traditions and oral rituals with scientific analysis, achieving a depth of insight that challenges widely held simplistic conceptions of the interrelations between science, religion, power, and identity.
The Collective Eye spoke to Slavs and Tatars about their collective self-conception, irritations and obstacles in the translation of knowledge, Orientalism and the hegemony of the English language, and collective curating.
