Full Description
This volume presents the results of archaeological research at the Mare de Kissi in the years 1996 to 2001. The investigated archaeological sites are located in the hinterland of the eastern Niger bend in the extreme northeast of Burkina Faso, on the edge of a small lake, the Mare de Kissi. The sites of Kissi comprise about 60 anthropogenic mounds, numerous stone structures and several cemeteries. The location was occupied by sedentary Iron Age farmers from the late 1st millennium BC up to the ca. 13th century AD, when it was finally abandoned. Excavations in both settlement and cemetery areas provided an exceptional inventory of finds and the basis for a reconstruction of the settlement history at the Mare de Kissi.
