Der englischsprachige Band bietet einen Überblick über die Entwicklungen im Bereich historischer Bildung in den Nachfolgestaaten Jugoslawiens und der Republik Moldova seit Mitte der 1990er Jahre bis heute. Ausgangspunkt aller Beiträge ist der Nations- und Staatsbildungsprozess mit seinen Auswirkungen auf Geschichtspolitik und Schule im Rahmen eines ermutigenden, aber auch widersprüchlichen Transformationsprozesses. Ergänzend wird die Rolle der in der Region international agierenden Bildungsakteure und -institutionen untersucht. Unter welchen Voraussetzungen und mit welchen Mitteln Reformen und Interventionen im Bildungsbereich nachhaltig wirken können, in welche Richtung sich historische Narrationen entwickeln - diese und ähnliche Fragen sucht der Band zu beantworten. Er erlaubt aus interdisziplinärer Perspektive Einblicke in die komplexen Transformationen des Bildungssektors in Südosteuropa.

This collection of essays gives an overview on current developments in the field of education in the successor states of ex-Yugoslavia and the Republic of Moldova from the mid 1990s to today. The impact of nation- and state-building processes on the politics of history and on schooling are analysed against the background of the complex social and political transformations that have been taking place in the region; changes that are usually subsumed under the problematic and rather unspecific notion of 'transition'. The book engages in such issues like: What is the role of international actors and which impact have interventions in education? What are the preconditions for lasting and sustainable reforms in education? What goals are inscribed in history textbook narratives? The book addresses these questions from an interdisciplinary perspective and offers insights into the complicated and ambiguous developments in the field of education in Southeast Europe during the last decade.

Simone Lässig ist seit Oktober 2006 Direktorin des Georg-Eckert-Instituts für internationale Schulbuchforschung und Professorin für Neuere und Neueste Geschichte an der Technischen Universität Braunschweig. Zuvor war sie Research Fellow am Deutschen Historischen Institut in Washington, D.C. und wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin an der Technischen Universität Dresden.

Augusta Dimou ist wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Institut für Slawistik der Universität Leipzig. Ihr Spezialgebiet ist vergleichende Geschichte Südosteuropas.
Dr. Augusta Dimou is academic associate researcher at the Institute of Slavic Studies of the University of Leipzig. Her research interests revolve around the comparative history of South-east Europe.
