Der zweite Band der Reihe "In kaiserlichem Auftrag" trägt den Untertitel "Altertumskundliche Untersuchungen der DAE in Tigray/Äthiopien".
In mehr als 25 Beiträgen werden Autoren über "Äthiopien im Spiegel historischer Karten" (F. Haubold) und über "Äthiopien vor 100 Jahren" (Asfa-Wossen Asserate), über die historische Landschaft Tigrays (W. Smidt) sowie über Nordtigray und Eritrea anhand der damals angefertigten Fotografien (A. Ritler und L. Lätt) referieren (Teil 1). Zur DAE wird u. a. die Fortsetzung des Littmann'schen Tagebuches (R. Voigt) geboten, D. Phillipson bespricht die Leistungen der DAE und H. v. Lüpke legt nach Archivrecherchen neue Erkenntnisse zum "Innen leben" der Expedition, ergänzt durch Anmerkungen von St. Wenig, vor (Teil 2).
Der dritte Teil zur Archäologie und Geschichte nimmt einen breiten Raum ein. Nach einer Einführung durch P. Henze resümieren R. Fattovich und J. Phillips die archäologische Forschung in Tigray seit der DAE, während andere Autoren neue Forschungen in Tigray vorstellen. Im vierten Teil werden Materialien wie Inschriften, Münzen, Kleinfunde und anderes besprochen.
Ein dritter abschließender Band, der sich vornehmlich den ethnologischen Forschungen der DAE und den von ihr besuchten Kirchen und Klöstern in Aksum, Adwa und Debre Damo widmet, ist in Arbeit.

The overall investigation of the kingdom of Aksum and its legacy, in the town as well as in the related areas, through archaeology, epigraphy, philology, linguistics, ethnology, still appears a worthwhile, substantial and unitary field for scholarly investigation."
