Valentin Ruhry ( 1982 in Graz, lebt inWien) studierte Multimedia und Plastik ander Universität fu r angewandte Kunst inWien. Er arbeitet an Fragestellungen, die,zunächst mit der Skulptur verbunden, aufbenachbarte Disziplinen der bildendenKunst wie z. B. die Malerei u bertragenwerden. Anlässlich seiner Einzelausstellung"réclamer" im Grazer Ku nstlerhaus Halle fu r Kunst & Medien erscheint nundie erste monografische Publikation.Mit seinen im Grazer Ausstellungsraumverteilt angebrachten Leuchtkästenrahmenbezieht sich Ruhry auf die Reklame- bzw.die Werbefunktion, mit der Leuchtkästenkonnotiert sind, und präsentiert damit derenFunktionsverlust. Charakteristisch fu rdas Werk Ruhrys thematisieren die Objekteverstärkt den sie unmittelbar umgebendenRaum, die wechselwirkenden Licht- undSchattenverläufe sowie die Analyse vonLichtkunst allgemein.
Accompanying the exhibition "réclamer"im Grazer Ku nstlerhaus Halle fu r Kunst& Medien will be published the artist sfirst monograph. With the exhibitionat Graz Valentin Ruhry is roughlyreferencing advertising or the promotionalfunction actually connoted by light boxes.This loss of function is represented by thelight-box frames assembled throughoutthe exhibition, "both through theircomponents and in and of themselves".Due to their unusual permeability, theobjects increasingly thematise the spaceimmediately surrounding them. The lightboxes delimit light on walls and ambientlight, fostering interactive progressions oflight and shadow that are reminiscent ofcompositions of colour-field painting, ofall things. Taking centre stage here seemsto be this highlighting of transitions inthe dispersal of light in space and thehighlighting of gaps on the sculpturalobject, and, in general, also the reciprocalrelationship between aspects of colourand form in lieu of an analytical updateof light art in a broader sense. In callingattention to the shifts between exhibitionspace that is either "played on" by art or"art-free", the artist allowsthe pictorialspace to be inverted in the space beyondthese spaces through the framing edgesof the light boxes. Once again, ValentinRuhry succeeds in operating along thepermeability of the boundaries betweenthe respective inside and outside ofdisciplines. It is with this approach thathe especially succeeds in detecting thethreatening enmeshments of referentialsystems.
