Full Description
The town of Adorf is struggling with the typical problems of rural regions: an ageing and declining population, a loss of attractiveness as a place to live and work, and the resulting difficult economic situation. The town is countering this change with improvements to infrastructure and educational opportunities. The new Mother-of-Pearl Experience Museum is a flagship project for the town and the region, intended to be a symbol of identity and a driver of positive development. Nowhere else in Germany is there a museum dedicated to river pearl mussels, pearl fishing and mother-of-pearl production, which Adorf hopes to use as an attractive and unique selling point for actively shaping structural change.
The site of the new building was a wasteland with no appeal in terms of appearance. Some of the old buildings included in the project were unused and threatened with decay. Preserving and continuing to use them stabilised and strengthened the local situation. The intervention created a lively place that enhances both the immediate surroundings and, thanks to its proximity to the market square and town hall, the entire town centre. The integration of the historic city wall into the museum's patio brings the city's history to life.
The brothers Ansgar and Benedikt Schulz founded the Schulz und Schulz Architekten architectural firm in 1992. Inspired by their work on the competition to redesign Leipzig Central Station - for which Ansgar and Benedikt Schulz won second prize in 1994 -, the architects decided to work in Leipzig in the future. Their work focuses on public buildings in the fields of education, research and culture, for which they soon gained international recognition and received numerous awards, including the European Balthasar Neumann Prize. For the St Trinitatis Provost Church in Leipzig, designed by them, they gained the International Prize for Sacred Architecture. At the World Architecture Festival WAF 2016 the church was named »Religious Building of the Year«. The building was published by Edition Axel Menges as volume 83 in the Opus series. The architects' most recent work is the new building for the German Embassy in Vienna, published as volume 89 in the Opus series. In 2018, Schulz und Schulz received the Grand DAI Prize for Building Culture as an honorary award for their complete architectural oeuvre and their services to building culture.
