Im Herbst 2015 wird nach mehrjähriger Kernsanierung das Gebäudeensemble der Bühnen der Stadt Köln - Oper, Schauspiel und Opernterrassen - wiedereröffnet. Das zwischen 1954 und 1962 nach Plänen des Architekten Wilhelm Riphahn (1889-1963) erbaute musisch-geistige Zentrum der Kulturmetropole Köln wurde rasch zu einer Ikone der Nachkriegsarchitektur. Die lange umstrittene und heiß diskutierte Neugestaltung stellt eine Gradwanderung zwischen Modernisierung und Denkmalschutz dar.
