Das ist Die Visuelle BibliothekHerbert Maiers faszinierendes Projekt ist der gelungene Versuch, global zu denken: Es zeugt von der Verfügbarkeit der Bilder, der Langsamkeit klassischer Malerei sowie der Leidenschaft des Reisens und des Sammelns. Die Bilder, mit denen Herbert Maier aus aller Welt zurückkehrt, sind Bilder, die Leute von sich und anderen gemacht haben, sie zeigen die menschliche Kultur in all ihren Facetten, in ihrer Schönheit und in ihrer abgründigen Dimension. Gesichter, Porträts, Köpfe und Masken - kaum ein anderes Motiv hat global häufiger Eingang in die Kunst- und Kulturgeschichte gefunden; steckt doch hinter jeder Abbildung eines Menschen, sei sie noch so stilisiert oder noch so individuell-naturalistisch ausgeführt, die Hoffnung, die Quintessenz des Menschseins als solchem zu treffen. Über viele Jahre hinweg ist Herbert Maier an die unterschiedlichsten Orte und in die verschiedensten Regionen gereist, nach Pakistan, Indien, Nepal, Mexiko, Guatemala, in die USA, nach Israel, in den Iran und in die Stammesgebiete Westafrikas. Seine Visuelle Bilbliothek ist eng mit diesen Reisen verbunden. Die Begegnungen mit anderen Menschen und die Aufnahme ihrer künstlerischen wie kulturellen Zeugnisse in den eigenen imaginären Bildspeicher wurde für ihn ebenso wichtig wie die Auseinandersetzung mit westlicher Kunstgeschichte. Seit 2009 arbeitet Herbert Maier an dieser Enzyklopädie, die in der Zwischenzeit über 500 Aquarelle umfasst. Nur die Aquarelltechnik, die sich durch Transparenz und Leichtigkeit auszeichnet, erlaubt(e) es, eine solche Vielzahl Bilder in so kurzer Zeit anzufertigen.Ausstellung:Museum Neuer Kunst, Freiburg, 29/10/2016-26/2/2017

It is The Visual LibraryHerbert Maier's fascinating project represents a successful attempt at global thinking: it bears witness to the availability of images, the slowness of classical painting as well as his passion for travel and collections. The images with which Herbert Maier returns from all over the world are images that people have created of themselves and of others; they show human culture in all its facets, in its beauty and in its abysmal dimensions. Faces, portraits, heads and masks - hardly any other motif is represented more frequently in the history of art and culture; behind every representation of a human being lies the hope of revealing the quintessence of humanity as such, however stylized or individualistic and naturalistic it may be. For many years, Herbert Maier traveled to various places and regions, to Pakistan, India, Nepal, Mexico, Guatemala, the USA, Israel, Iran and the tribal areas of West Africa. His visual library is closely linked with these journeys. Encounters with other people and the inclusion of their artistic and cultural testimonies his personal imaginary image memory became just as important to him as the examination of Western art. Since 2009, Herbert Maier has been working on this encyclopaedia, which currently contains over 500 watercolours.
