Franz Liszt, Schüler von Czerny und Salieri in Wien, war einer der bedeutendsten Klaviervirtuosen und unternahm ausgedehnte Konzertreisen durch Europa. 1842 wurde er Hofkapellmeister in Weimar, 1862 ging er nach Rom und nahm 1865 die niederen Weihen als Geistlicher an. Von Jugend an religiös gesinnt, schrieb Liszt im fortgeschrittenen Alter mehrere geistliche Werke.
