Description
What is it like to play a tree? Reflections and instructions for an art game with non-human entities.
What is it like to play a tree? This volume includes an asymmetrical experimental board game for four players, in which participants take on the roles of industrialist, citizens, woods, or lake. But beware - the roles will change, and so will your perspective! The contributions explore the game, its context, and the ludic method - an experimental approach developed by artist Margarete Jahrmann that uses the power of play to investigate contemporary social and political dynamics. Situated at the intersection of art, game design, and cultural analysis, TREEgame invites readers to playfully explore their relationship with the natural world.
Margarete Jahrmann is an internationally renowned artist, researcher, and professor of experimental game cultures at Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien. She was awarded the Austrian Art Prize 2025 and the Media Art Prize of the City of Vienna in 2020 for her continuous work in critical media and ludic art. Her work focuses on playable performative and installation pieces that explore AI and role play, as well as the blurring of the boundaries between fiction and reality in AI and art.
Thomas Brandstetter is a lecturer at Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien whose work is situated at the intersection of game studies, game design, and cultural studies. As well as his work in media studies and the history of science and technology, he publishes on topics ranging from seventeenth-century technology to imaginings of extraterrestrial life.
