Anaemia in pregnancy and the puerperium is a common disorder throughout the world. It has highly detrimental effects on the course of pregnancy, fetal development and the puerperium. An early diagnosis, achieved by appropriate diagnostic investigations, is both necessary and possible. Most forms of anaemia can be avoided by preventative measures, and are also easily treated. The availability of safe and effective intravenous iron preparations represents a major progress in the treatment of iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anaemia. To date, the medical textbook market has lacked a monograph solely focussing on anaemia in Obstetric Medicine.
