Zum ersten Mal ist Hannah Arendts letztes Buchprojekt nach der Typoskript-Fassung zu lesen, begleitet von zum Teil bisher unpubliziert gebliebenen ergänzenden Texten.»The Life of the Mind« war Arendts letztes Buchprojekt, an dem sie Ende der 60er Jahre zu arbeiten begonnen hatte und dessen Typoskript in unabgeschlossener Form vorlag, als sie 1975 starb. Von ihr konzipiert als »eine Art zweiter Band« der Vita Activa, ihrer berühmten Analyse der Tätigkeiten Arbeiten, Herstellen und Handeln, zielt »The Life of the Mind« darauf ab, die geistigen Aktivitäten Denken, Wollen und Urteilen und deren Beziehungsstruktur sowie deren jeweiligen Bezug zur Erscheinungswelt zu untersuchen.Diese neue, kritische Ausgabe präsentiert zum ersten Mal den Text der Typoskripte, wie Arendt sie hinterlassen hat: vollständige Entwürfe der ersten beiden Teile, Thinking und Willing, sowie das Titelblatt des dritten, Judging. Darüber hinaus umfasst diese Ausgabe eine Reihe von ergänzenden Texten, darunter Arendts Aufsatz »Thinking and Moral Considerations«, sowie bisher unveröffentlichte Vorlesungstexte wie »Thinking« und »The History of the Will« und verschiedene Seminarnotizen und Kursmaterialien.Alle Texte wurden von den Herausgeber*innen sorgfältig kommentiert, was einen einzigartigen und detaillierten Einblick in die Fülle der von Arendt verwendeten Zitate und Quellen in mehreren Sprachen ermöglicht und so neue Perspektiven auf ihren Umgang mit der philosophischen und literarischen Tradition eröffnet. Die Edition wird ein Neubeginn für die Rezeption von Arendts großem unvollendeten Werk sein.»The Life of the Mind« was Hannah Arendt's final book project. Prompted in part by her experience reporting on the trial of Adolf Eichmann, and conceived as a sequel to »The Human Condition«, her landmark study of the »vita activa«, »The Life of the Mind« explores what Arendt calls the three basic mental activities-thinking, willing, and judging-and their relations to one another and to the world of appearances. The book remained incomplete at the time of Arendt's death in 1975.This new, critical edition presents, for the first time, the constituted text of the typescript for »The Life of the Mind« as Arendt left it, comprising complete drafts of the first two parts, »Thinking and Willing«, and the title page of the third part, »Judging«. This edition also incorporates a wealth of supplementary material, including Arendt's essay, "Thinking and Moral Considerations," previously unpublished lecture notes on "Thinking" and "The History of the Will," and related seminar notes and course materials. Detailed annotations by the editors provide a comprehensive and authoritative record of Arendt's engagement with a wide diversity of philosophical and literary texts. The annotations cite original sources, many preserved in the archive of Arendt's vast personal library, supplemented by references to contemporary scholarly editions. The publication of this groundbreaking edition of »The Life of the Mind« marks a new beginning in the reading and reception of Hannah Arendt's great last work. Anne Eusterschulte ist eine der Hauptherausgeberinnen der Kritischen Arendt-Gesamtausgabe. Sie ist seit 2007 Professorin für Geschichte der Philosophie an der Freien Universität Berlin und hat zuletzt u. a. publiziert: Theodor W. Adorno: Ästhetische Theorie (Mithg., 2021) sowie zu Hannah Arendt »Spontaneität und Urteilsfähigkeit« (2021) oder Hannah Arendt und die Weltlichkeit der Künste (2025, zus. m. Judith Siegmund und Marita Tatari). Anne Eusterschulte is a general editor of the Hannah Arendt Critical Edition. She has been Professor of History of Philosophy at Freie Universität Berlin since 2007 and her most recent publications include: Theodor W.
