Das vorliegende Werk stellt eine möglichst vollständige, zusammenfassende Übersicht dar. Es werden nicht nur die mitteleuropäischen Sippen behandelt, sondern auch die aus anderen Kontinenten berücksichtigt, um eine eindeutige Identifizierung zu gewährleisten.

Dies ist die dritte Bearbeitung der Zygnemales in der ,,Süßwasserflora". Da die Konjugationsstadien nur selten auffindbar sind, ist die geographische Verbreitung der Zygnemales auch derzeit nur lückenhaft bekannt. Deshalb wurden bei dieser Bearbeitung nicht nur die Arten aus Mitteleuropa bzw.
