As Vietnam enters into the 21st century there is a growing need to address the role of local knowledge of highland ethnic minorities and their livelihood security. This book critically examines the local knowledge of the Yao ethnic minority of Lao Cai province in the face of this rapid and difficult economic transition into the market economy. The Yao, along with other highland minority groups are facing with increasing threats to their livelihoods as their natural resources are facing over exploitation due in part to top down government policies.
