Description
In the interplay between virtuality and materiality, culture is constantly being created through new processes of negotiation: cultural influences are available in the realm of ideas and shape our perception of the physical world by organising, filtering and defining it. At the same time, virtually generated ideas influence our everyday encounters with materiality and shape social practices in a sustainable manner. Materiality and virtuality are not conflicting concepts, but rather form a productive interaction. The contributions in this volume explore this interplay from various perspectives. They focus on the interrelationship between the material and virtual worlds before the digital age, the potential of virtualising research data, its modelling and analysis, and the challenges associated with the digital transformation of material objects. These approaches provide an opportunity for examining the entanglements of virtuality and materiality in their 'longue durée'.
