Der Revolutionsbegriff nimmt im Selbstverständnis der Moderne einen prominenten Stellenwert ein. Mit den Revolutionen in Amerika und Frankreich, die sich wesentlich auf die Erklärung der Menschenrechte stützen, kommt der Antike eine herausragende Bedeutung zu: Der Bezug auf sie erlaubt den Bruch mit der Vergangenheit. In der Alten und Neuen Welt werden antike Ideale humanen Selbstverständnisses entworfen, um die Errungenschaften der Gegenwart zu überhöhen und zu kritisieren. Der vorliegende Band untersucht aus europäischer und amerikanischer Perspektive das Verhältnis von Humanismus und Revolution: Erörtert werden die Grundlagen des Humanismus, das Verhältnis von Politik und Recht, von Kunst und Politik, die wissenschaftliche Revolution wie auch die Geographie des Humanismus in der Beziehung von Europa und Neuer Welt. Welche Rückwirkungen erbringen diese Konzeptionen für die Idee des Humanismus? Wie aktuell ist der Humanismus des 18. Jahrhunderts?

The concept of revolution is of crucial importance for the self-perception of modernity. For the American and French Revolutions, grounded in the declaration of human rights, references to classical antiquity play a central role: the appeal to antiquity allows for the revolutionary break from tradition. On both sides of the Atlantic, classical antiquity provides ideals of humanity that both celebrate and criticize the achievements of modernity. This volume examines the relationship between humanism and revolution from both European and American perspectives: central themes are the foundations of humanism, the relationships among politics, law, and art, but also the Scientific Revolution and the geography of revolution as it comes to the fore in the circulation of ideas between Europe and the "New World". How modern, in other words, is the humanism of the eighteenth century.

Uwe Steiner, geb. 1955; Studium der Germanistik und Politologie an der Freien Universität Berlin; 1987 Promotion; 1998 Habilitation; Professor of German an der Rice University, Houston/Texas; Publikationen zur Literatur und Philosophie des 18. und 20. Jahrhunderts.Martin Vöhler studierte Germanistik, Gräzistik und Religionswissenschaft in Berlin und Thessaloniki. Von 1990-95 arbeitete er als Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der FU Berlin. 1996 promovierte er über Hölderlins Hymnen. Seit 1999 arbeit am Archiv für die Rezeption der Antike in der deutschsprachigen Literatur seit 1945 (FU Berlin).
