Key-001 Responsible mining T Butler International Council on Mining and Metals, London, United Kingdom In order to be sustainable, mining needs to operate responsibly. We know that we will inevitably cause some negative impacts if collectively we want to realise benefits from natural mineral resources. For the past 15 years, ICMM's 23 member companies have been working together to minimise and mitigate negative impacts while seeking to enhance the benefits of mining. They have been working in collaboration with others on particular challenges such as water, environmental stewardship and community engagement. In parallel, societal expectations continue to evolve, for example in the areas of human rights and supply chains, local economic development and skills transfer, and managing biodiversity. Leading companies such as our members understand that they need to keep pace with these evolving expectations if they are to maintain their license to operate, which in turn will enable them to continue to produce the minerals that are needed to sustain modern life.
