Er war Preisträger bei über zehn internationalen Musikwettbewerben. Seine Konzerttätigkeit führte ihn durch viele europäische Länder wie Italien, Spanien, Frankreich und Japan. Zahlreiche Rundfunk- und CD-Produktionen vervollständigen sein künstlerisches Profil. Martin Hegel ist Lehrer an verschiedenen Berliner Musikschulen und beschäftigt sich seit vielen Jahren mit der Didaktik der Gitarre.
